Credit Card Recommendations?
August 23rd, 2007Credit Card recommendations anyone? I’ve never owned a credit card, well, mostly because I’ve never really had much money to spend and it would probably be a good idea to start building my credit now so I need to sign up for a credit card. I’m just looking for something to give me cash back on gas and maybe other stuff with the usual sign-up bonuses - no annual fee, low apr, etc. I don’t ever plan on spending money that I don’t have so some of that stuff shouldn’t really affect me anyways right? I was thinking maybe a card like Discover’s Platinum Gas Card would be good. I’ve also read stuff about some gas stations being registered as supermarkets rather than gas stations (thus lower cash back rate). Is that applicable to Naperville/Chicago area? Anyhow, any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks.

i dunno about discover, a lot of places don’t take discover. a lot of credit cards offer either reward points or cash back offers, some double the rewards when used at certain groceries or gas stations. passwird.com usually offers a lot of credit cards. i have citicard, which gives me one point for ever dollar spent, one point for every flight mile acquired from flying. chase has a good reward program too.. there are even some out there who offer a gift card to best buy for signing up. lastly, almost everyone offers at least 6 months of 0% APR and/or 4.**% fixed apr for balance transfers. after that the apr is usually between 12-18%.

i agree, don’t get discover, it seems to be dying out. i’ve heard american express is really harsh if you are late with even 1 payment. i’d go w visa/mastercard. i have citi dividend, it gives 1% cashback on everything i buy, i think 2 or 3% on gas/groceries/drugstores. if you’re responsible and always pay on time, interest doesn’t matter as much. the deal w my credit card seems pretty universal across many cards, so i’d say sign up for one that gives a bonus, like $200 cash for signing up, i’ve seen that with chase occasionaly.
funny story with mine, i applied online, and accidently submitted twice, so i got 2 cards. when i called to cancel one of them, i asked if i could combine the 2 1% cash backs into 2% on my remaining card, and they actually agreed, with the rule that it’d only last for 6 months or a year or something. nonetheless, i had 2% cash back on everything for awhile, which was sweet, i got $80 back instead of $40 in the end.
